Dreams of Gods & Monsters by Laini Taylor
If you like: expanding worlds * destiny * powerful female characters
Dreams of Gods and Monsters is the final book in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy. (See my reviews of book one and book two.) The future of Earth stands in the balance of the fight between Angels and Beasts. As the fight escalates, new enemies and new allies are revealed. Though the past has always played an important role in this trilogy, the present and future become intermingled into the entire history of this conflict. Of course, the series wouldn’t be complete without the same great friends, and all the joy Zuzana brings to the story.
The battle between Angels and Beasts has been the defining conflict of both races, but in Dreams they learn that this has been a warm up for an even greater battle to come. Everyone learns that people can change. New alliances are formed. Just as they always dreamed, Karou and Akiva are the beginning. Their trust in each other helps to bring their peoples together, and many realize that their history of war does not mean they cannot come together if they both take a reluctant step back from the front lines and toward the negotiating table. Akiva’s history and origins are explained when the truth behind myths of society are revealed, and information that has been lost to generations is distilled to the truth at its core. Each time a new truth is revealed the entire nature of the world seems to shift to accommodate it. When hundreds of years of conflict becomes irrelevant in an instant, it is nearly impossible for anyone to hold on to that battle.
Unfortunately, the story cannot resolve to chocolate cakes and baths in hot springs. Karou and Akiva learn that saving the world does not mean that you get what you want. Sometimes, you don’t even know what you truly want. They learn that you do not need to have a fairy tale ending to find happiness. Having an open mind is the greatest asset, in battle and in rebuilding. Clever thinking and cunning can do a lot more than a sword. Knowing this can be your greatest asset, or your downfall if you intend to rely on brute strength. In a world of destruction and death, sometimes a clean shirt can make all the difference. Dreams teaches us not to waste our wishes, but not to hoard them either. Sometimes a carefully executed wish can lead to more than you ever expected. Most importantly, never underestimate the power of kindness and music. The combination of world changing views and simple pleasures makes the story a carefully woven combination of mythic and tangible. Each character has the capacity to change the future in both grand gestures and everyday kindnesses. You only need to follow your heart to save the world.
If you know nothing ends a long day better than chocolate cake, read Dreams of Gods and Monsters.
