The Last Winter of Dani Lancing by P. D. Viner
If you like: investigations * ghosts * taking things into your own hands
The Last Winter of Dani Lancing is the story of Dani, her murder, and her life -- and the secrets that hold wove it together. It is clear that no one ever really knows what is going on inside your head. The aftermath of her death changes those she left behind, especially her parents. The scars of youth shape your life, and your life changes the lives of those around you.
The story of Dani is the story of never really knowing someone else. Everyone carries secret thoughts inside of them. Some also carry secret pains. We shape who we want to be perceived as and project that image to others. We do not want to disappoint, and the expectations of those we love can hinder us. Trying to be strong for another can be the final act that pushes you over the edge. Sometimes you truly cannot recover from a great loss. Fighting for revenge, retribution, the truth, and punishment can suck so much out of you that you have nothing left to live your own life. We may hope to protect the ones we love by keeping secrets, but in many ways that can hurt them even more.
Certain people have a great impact on your life. They shape your destiny. You seek justice and try not repeat their mistakes. Focusing all our energy on that one person can make you crazy. It can lead you to shrink away from what you loved, especially if you loved it together. Losing them will make you feel like a failure. You may throw yourself into a new cause as a distraction, and lose who you were along the way. The loss may lead you to push yourself to a point that you never thought you would get to, leading you to live in regret. We are all haunted by ghosts of the past -- some ghosts are just more tangible than others. The spirit of memory guides us towards the truth, and pushes us to get through. You can use the push of loss to live a different and more meaningful life, or you can be pushed by it into the oblivion of despair and never find a way to truly live again.
If you cannot let go of what could have been, read The Last Winter of Dani Lancing.
